Decisions You Will Need to Make When Planning a Funeral

After my father passed away suddenly, my mother, siblings and I all struggled with planning his funeral. We were already in a state of shock and sorrow, and then we were overwhelmed with the options and decisions we had to make in regards to the funeral. Luckily for us, we worked with an amazing funeral home and funeral director who helped guide us through the process. I know how hard it is to plan a funeral and how many decisions need to be made. This website was created in order to give families preparing to lay a loved one to rest a guide of sorts that will help them determine what decisions will need to be made and information about those decisions. I extend my sympathies to you if you are in this position and hope my website helps to make things a little bit easier for you.

Design Embellishments To Consider For Your Cemetery Headstone

Blog

Choosing a headstone for yourself or your loved one is a highly personal process. The cemetery headstone you choose to install on a grave plot represents the life lived for centuries to come. Therefore, choosing the best monument and features is undeniably an important process.

While cemetery headstones were once plain and simple slabs of granite with a name and dates of life, modern-day monuments can be made with an array of features. In fact, there are quite a few embellishments that you may want to consider when tasked with picking a stone. Take a look at a few design embellishments to consider for your cemetery headstone.

Implemented Photographs

If you have a favorite photograph that is the perfect representation of you or your loved one, this can be added to the headstone. The photograph is encapsulated in an acrylic shell so it is protected from the elements and then cemented in place on the stone. This allows anyone who comes to visit the grave site to see a clear image of the individual that is buried there. While most people go with simply a headshot of one person, you could also opt for a couple's photo if the grave site will be shared by a couple.

Laser-Etched Symbols

From religious or spiritual symbols to more complex designs, laser etching allows for a cemetery headstone to have impressive decorative elements. Some people even opt to have a photograph permanently embedded into their stone's surface via laser etching. For example, some manufacturers can take a photo of a face and use computer-aided laser technology to transfer the lines of that image onto the stone. You could also consider adding:

  • Words or quotes in fine script or your own handwriting
  • Special landscape or natural scenes
  • Decorative elements like filigree lines or shapes
  • Images related to personal interests
  • Floral designs, vines, or other natural elements

Pick a Favorite Headstone Color

Today, you don't have to stick with a plain gray slab when it comes to cemetery headstones. You can opt for stones in different shades because some stones are made with synthetic materials or created from stone particles that can be tinted with pigmentation. If you have a color preference for the stone, be sure to talk to the funeral home about what colors may be available. Manufacturers now make stones in colors that range from black and deep mauve to lighter blue tones and even pastel pink.
